Chivayo Says Makandiwa Declined Gift, Opted For Prayer Instead
Prophetic leader Emmanuel Makandiwa and his wife Ruth turned down a gift offer from businessman Wicknell Chivayo, choosing prayer over material donation, Chivayo has said.
In a public statement responding to criticism from ex-legislator Temba Mliswa, Chivayo listed several church leaders who accepted or rejected his donations.
According to him, Makandiwa and his wife declined the offer and instead invited him for prayer, wishing him continued success so he could help more people.
Chivayo said others who accepted his gifts included Prophet Talent Chiwanga, Apostle Talent Chiwenga, Apostle Andre Mutendi, Prophet Walter Magaya and Prophet Tichafa Manyika. He also named those who refused, namely ZAOGA leader Ruth Makoni and Zimbabwe Football Association head Nqobile Nkomo.
Nkomo said he rejected the offer to avoid conflicts with FIFA’s ethics code, which bars football administrators from receiving gifts that could influence decisions.
The businessman said his donations are personal and voluntary. “If someone accepts, they accept. If they refuse, they refuse. I move on.
There are many others waiting,” he wrote, adding that his giving is not tied to politics.
The remarks came after Mliswa accused Chivayo of using gifts to influence legislators supporting Constitutional Amendment Bill 2.
Chivayo denied this, saying he only rewards individuals whose actions he admires, regardless of political affiliation.
Chivayo’s philanthropy has drawn attention in recent months due to high-value donations of vehicles and cash to musicians, pastors and public figures. The trend has sparked debate over ethics, influence and transparency in private giving.
Makandiwa has not issued a separate statement on the matter.
ZAOGA leader Makoni had earlier confirmed she declined a vehicle and cash donation from Chivayo in 2025, citing her late husband’s principle of avoiding personal gifts.
